Donna died while our class was in 10th grade during the Christmas break. Donna died on December 30 1978, two days after her 16th birthday from an asthma attack. I had known Donna for several years and we shared three classes together in our sophmore year at Broughton. She was a fun, witty and smart friend who passed way way too soon.
I still think about Donna often and fondly remember chatting with her and her friend Christy Moore in 9th and 10th grade at our lockers (Donna kept her books in Christy's locker). I'll never forget Christy carrying around Donna's books, handing them into teachers after Donna's untimely and tragic death. That was one of my first experiences with death-the sudden fury with which it upends the lives of those left behind. These are the high school experiences that shape our lives more than anything else. Sending warm thoughts to Donna's family and loved ones, all these years later.
